Muslims believe that Ishmael should be included in the prophetic line, yet it is clear from the Bible (and a certain aya in the Qur’an, S. 29:27) that there was only ONE line which God would work through, and that was the line of Isaac. To understand this, one needs to look at the discussion Abraham had with God on the issue of Ishmael and Isaac, in Genesis 17:18-21, and God’s clear and unique choice of Isaac in Genesis 22:2, 12, & 16. This clear choice of Isaac over Ishmael and a brilliant application of the difference between the progeny of both is best explained by the apostle Paul, where he says categorically that we are to have nothing to do with the slave woman’s son, Ishmael, for we are from the free woman’s son, Isaac, the son of promise (Galatians 4:21-31).
